Russian Centre of Science and Culture bustled with over 100 people who were gathered to watch the screening of Invictus. The movie, inspired by the true story of the then President of South Africa Nelson Mandela’s initiative to abolish apartheid, was the first of the three films to be screened as part of the South African Film Festival organised here by Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF). Thangaraj, general secretary, ICAF, said, “It is the first time in the whole country that a South African Film Fest is happening in the country. And we are proud that Chennai is hosting it.” Thangaraj had gone to the Indian High Commission in Delhi last month and spoken to the South African official there regarding the idea. “That’s when they decided to give us a package of films which we will be screening in the city,” he said. ICAF organises three international film festivals every month. Besides South Africa, films from Japan were screened last week and those from Mexico will be screened the next week. At the inauguration, Nicole Pillay, first secretary, South African High Commission, New Delhi, and M Mogale, Deputy High Commissioner, South African High Commission, New Delhi, lit the lamp. Sivan Kannan, president, ICAF, D N Kar, Director of Income Tax (Exemptions), Chennai, and S Murali, treasurer, ICAF, were also present on the occasion. As part of the festival, an award-winning movie The Drum, directed by Zola Maseko will be screened at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture on October 25 at at 6.15 pm. The story is based in Sophiatown, South Africa, of the 1950s, and talks about the resistance of the blacks against the white minority. It is a story of struggle, hope and despair.
