36 Vayadhinile - A splendid message and a heartening comeback
36 Vayadhinile marks the comeback of the bubbly queen Jyotika who won a lot of hearts and made heads turn in her last film Mozhi directed by Radha Mohan. Though her last film on screen was Arjun's Manikanda, people always remember Mozhi as Jyotika's last film for the lovely message the film was wrapped up in.
Plot
Vasanthi (Jyotika) is a clerk working in the revenue department of the collector office. She has her own set of enemies in the office especially his boss and her colleague Rani who always annoys her. Vasanthi is trapped in an unhappy marriage life with Tamil Selvan (Rahman) and they have a daughter named Mithila. Tamil Selvan is planing to get settled in Ireland after gaining an employment opportunity there. However, he is forced to leave Vasanthi in India because of her age which excludes her from the eligibility of work permit.
One fine day, she receives a call from the office of the President of India to meet him in the Raj Bhavan during his visit to Chennai. An astonished Vasanthi meets him only to faint before him when he offers greetings. She was then ridiculed by everyone and this also puts her husband and daughter under humiliation from their colleagues and classmates.
How Vasanthi thwarts everyone's opinion on her and emerges winner in the end forms the rest of the story.
Plus
Jyothika's acting is the singular most highlight in the film. She exudes charm in the first half as mischievous Vasanthi, then transforms as an angry married woman and comes out successful in the end as a proud woman. She enacts her scenes with utmost brilliance and effortless ease. Rahman as Jo's husband also plays his role with perfection. He makes the audiences hate his character in the film comfortably. That's where an actor scores.
Santhosh Narayanan's score is as good as any of his films. Director Roshan Andrews has delivered one of this year's best messages through this beautiful slice of life story.
Minus
There are no such outright negatives in the film except for the documentary, tele-serial like portions in the second half. The director has made sure that the film should be short but in the process it looks a little hastily done.
Bottom-line
36 Vayadhinile will be lapped up all family audiences, especially women. It has everything a film should have to cater to all-women moviegoers.
Verdict : A splendid message and a heartening comeback
Stars : 3/5
