Aaaah - Though not the mother of horror flicks, they scare us in parts
Horripilating chills, irresistible Goosebumps, Adrenalin rush bumping off and some exciting laughter. The newfangled horror films of Tamil cinema have been emerging up with such formulae that have worked certainly good results in box office. In fact, it was a sigh of relief to many horror film buffs who were quite drilled with hackneyed stuffs of white-gown devils screaming with blood gory acts. Aaaah comes with certain freshness loaded with mediocre and director duo Harish-Hari of Tamil industry’s first 3D film ‘Ambuli’ offer this new unconventional outing.
Story
On a special gathering, Bobby Simha shoots the breeze out with his bunch of friends. On a sudden note, he bets them on his beliefs about existence of ghosts and insist that if friends prove of its non-existence, he is ready to gift them half his wealth. If not, his friend’s Yamaha bike is enough for stake. Now these pals with a desire to own these luxuries embark on a journey to different parts of the world. A mid sea where the ghosts of young couple is still existing in the same boat they disappeared before years, A desert, Japan and ATM machine.
Performance
Bobby Simha as his career is shot high on the graph deserves an immense appreciation for choosing this role. Albeit his minimal appearance in the film, he makes a trenchant mark with his portions. Others in the cast have lived up to their expectations. MS Bhaskar leaves you speechless and his portion involving his horror drama is spine-chilling.
Plus
Director duo Harish-Hari needs a toast of good mention for getting away from the stereotypical routes of Tamil horror films. Their attempt is completely fresh in spite of not all the portions chilling our spines. The casting looks perfect and actors try to be naturalistic in their approach towards situations. While all the anthologies in this film are convincing and pretty eerie, the final one involving ATM machine throws up the ultimate fear and exciting smile on your faces. Everything from performances and technical quotients has been perfectly done.
Minus
All of sudden, you’ll find the logic missing and it becomes a diminishing element out here. Especially, the desert segment, where in spite of knowing the ghost, a man following her up is a ludicrous one and few more to mention on this aspect. Cinematographer has exerted moderate efforts and in few scenes irks us with his non-stop camera rotation that leaves you nauseating and so is background score that keeps on and on in few places unnecessarily.
Overall, Aaaah is a different and unique experience for Tamil film audiences. Earlier, it was Ram Gopal Varma’s Darna Maana Hai that had six different horror stories and Harish-Hari have a decent attempt to it. Though not all are scary, the ATM one throws up a complete package of horror and adrenaline rush.
Verdict : Though not the mother of horror flicks, they scare us in parts
