Anegan - A perfectly masterminded psychological ride

KV Anand badly needs a hit after his last film Mattrraan bombed at the box-office. Meanwhile, Dhanush has to keep his momentum going and reputation intact after the blockbuster success of Velai Illa Pattathari which put him on the map as an actor who has the potential to deliver money-spinners at the box-office. So, have both KV Anand and Dhanush managed to deliver victory at the ticket window with Anegan?

Plot

Ashwin (Dhanush) works as a system administrator at a Gaming Company called Tentacles owned by Kiran (Karthik) and Amyra Dastur (Madhumita) works in the same organization as a creative designer for the games. Madhumita also undergoes a psychiatric treatment due to stress. She fantasizes stories from previous generations, puts herself in all stories as the central character alongside Dhanush and shares with her doctor, played by Malayalam actress Lena. Intrigued by her fantasized world, Dhanush thinks she is mentally sick. What is the answer to Amyra's inexplicable world? This is narrated through a roller-coaster ride which is absolutely engaging and exciting.

Plus

Dhanush appears in four different avatars, as Muna Runa, a passionate lover of Amyra in Burma, as Kaali, a devil-may-care attitude local Chennai boy from Vyasarpadi, the present day Ashwin and as Ilamaran, a king which is mostly used in song sequences. He has delivered a staggering performance with good versatility. His Madras slang for the role Kaali is an absolute delight and Dhanush has mastered it near-perfect. Amyra Dastur doesn't come across as a debutant but a seasoned performer in most of the scenes. She has complimented Dhanush well in all scenes. In fact, she has equal screentime with Dhanush. Karthik, Ashih Vidyarthi. Thalaivasal Vijay, Lena and Jegan have done good justice to their roles.

The number of twists in the film are really intriguing and cerebral. KV Anand doesn't leave us to bat an eyelid. The story moves at a swift pace and we have been thrown enough fodder at regular intervals to keep us pinned to the seats. Harris Jayaraj has also come up with good background score for the film. And the visuals of Om Prakash are picture perfect and he has restored the Burma portions in the film beautifully on screen.

Minus

The climax is a little underwhelming considering the potential the story had throughout its runtime. The amount of spoonfeeding KV Anand offers occasionally are annoying at times. There are four songs in the first half itself which goes a little draggy and the pace becomes sluggish at some junctures.

Bottom Line

KV Anand and Dhanush have proved themselves with a perfectly masterminded psychological thriller which is perfectly engaging and entertaining at the same time.

Verdict : A perfectly masterminded psychological ride

Stars : 2.5/5
