Aranmanai - Not an actual horror, but a fun-filled entertainer

Sundar C, the maker of many commercial entertainers, this time chooses an unique genre of horror-comedy to entertain the audience. Has he accomplished with his new attempt?

Story

When Vinay along with his wife Andrea Jeremiah returns back to his ancestral palace property to sell it, they decide to stay at this place for a while with family members that include Raai Laxmi, Kovai Sarala and many more. Santhanam in the name of a cook seems to be the grandson of a concubine to Zamindar who actually own the palace down the line. He is here to claim a share of his property. Everything seems to be a comedy and fun-filled drama until some paranormal activities that start happening there. Sundar C, who happens to be the elder brother of Andrea Jeremiah comes down to the place and starts discovering something phenomenal there following the discovery of a shocking past.

Performance

Hansika Motwani really deserves huge applause for trying out something beyond her usual paradigms. Santhanam comedy tracks are quite enjoyable and some of them being double entendres could have been avoided. Sundar C is just okay and Vinay is average. Andrea Jeremiah tries to raise the oomph factor with her glamorous and in places scares with spooky elements.

Plus

Sundar C’s ability to bring so many actors into the same film is worthy of appreciations. In the recent times, such trend is missing and we appreciate him for this unique ability. The screenplay is laced with some entertaining moments and Sundar C has crafted the script specially for the family audience and youth. There is comedy, emotions, mystery, glamour and horror.

Minus

It’s too old fashioned horror story and Sundar C has blatantly copycatted some of the most famous sequences in many Hollywood movies like opening fight sequence of Sundar C from Sherlock Holmes, the eerie elements from The Conjuring, Insidious, Paranormal activity and The Woman in Black. He could have at least tried something more new to scare the audiences. If this film was just a ‘comedy’, then it would have made more sense, but the tag ‘horror’ in name and no traces of it except the scaring formula through loud music and sound goes lifeless. Logics go missing terribly and Sundar C should have connected it well. Being a horror film, it lacks the perfection in CG works, top-notch cinematography and background score. They all become the absolute spoilers.

Overall, Aranmanai is a film with lack of logical quotients and eerie elements that are the top priority in a horror film, but Sundar C doesn’t miss to amuse the audience with his entertainment formula. This would surely attract audiences down the south and family audiences to look up for a time pass entertainer.

Verdict : Not an actual horror, but a fun-filled entertainer

Stars : 2/5
