Befikre - A Complete Love Entertainer!
REVIEW
Aditya Chopra returns to direction with Befikre, that stars Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor. Unlike his previous movies, especially Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge that catered to the old school romantic in you, Befikre adheres to modern tenets of love.
Befikre is a romance drama, which has been written by director Aditya Chopra, who has also produced it under his banner Yash Raj Films. Set in Paris, Befikre is a contemporary love story, which celebrates love- sensual, carefree and focused on living life to the fullest. The film was shot over a period of 50 days in Paris and Mumbai.
STORY
The movie starts with Dharam (Ranveer Singh) and Shyra (Vaani Kapoor) having a huge fight and later breaking off, especially after Dharam calls her a French slut. Then the movie uses the now-tired technique of using flashbacks how they hooked up an year ago. Dharam a stand-up comedian from Delhi was called in Paris to work at his friend’s club. Shyra is, in her words, a French born to Indian parents. When they start off their lusty hookup, it was all fire and passion. However, a year’s passage cools things up. Battling their ups and downs, both realize that love is a leap of faith that can only be taken by those who dare to love.
PERFORMANCE
As usual Ranveer Singh has given brilliant performance and he impresses the viewers with his child-like attitude. Vaani Kapoor has equally done well and her act of free-spirited girl is sure to win her million hearts. The energy in acting and the sparkling chemistry between the two are the highlights of Befikre.
Befikre has a routine romantic story, but Aditya Chopra has made the film an interesting watch with some twists and turns in the screenplay. Some romantic moments keep viewers engaged throughout the film, which features a series of lip-locks of the lead pair.
That they get to do this against the scenic backdrop of Paris is a huge bonus. Aditya Chopra has chosen some breathtaking settings as the location for his latest film, and as an viewer, one is glad for that.
There are innumerable throwbacks to DDLJ and most bring a smile to your face. One that particularly stands out is a mother-daughter scene, much like the Farida Jalal-Kajol scene. There, Jalal's character told Kajol's that women have to suppress their feelings; in this updated version, Shyra’s mother tells her to stand up for herself.
Befikre has some honest, funny moments and the attempt to upgrade the romcom genre is apparent, but like most romcoms, you don’t come away with anything new.
