Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru - A Well-Knitted Thriller!
REVIEW
Barring Rahman, the star cast comprises new faces, including the director of the film, 22-year-old Karthick Naren and music director Jakes Bejoy. The first look of the film was released by director Gautham Menon, while Madhavan released the storyline poster and A R Rahman released the trailer and a song from the film.
STORY
Retired cop Deepak (Rahman) recalls his famous unsolved psycho killer case to a young man, who wants to become an IPS officer. Six years back, one of the regular days of Deepak begins in his police station. As he gets into his cabin, head constable tells Deepak about a suicide case but during the investigation, they get to know it’s a murder. While Deepak tries to find the reason behind the mysterious murder, he gets another call saying an young girl is missing from her apartment with visible blood traces on the floor. Deepak makes tremendous progress in cracking the real murderer and also finds a strange connect between these cases but he is unable to arrest anyone. Why? Watch the film on the Sliver Screens.
PERFORMANCE
Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru is undoubtedly a welcome relief from the low-grade comedy, garish costumes and meaningless songs and dances that Tamil cinema is largely known for. Naren - who has also written the story, must be commended for his highly focused way of narration. No distractions here. Rahman is effective as the policeman called upon to do something which he does not quite cherish. But does he have a choice? Perhaps, a more seasoned helmer could have brought out this dilemma with greater conviction.
Also, Naren’s scripting often appears muddled -- causing confusion in the mind of a viewer. A thriller or mystery cannot, after all, be such a jigsaw puzzle that solving it diminishes a fair degree of cinematic enjoyment.
To be honest, the story of Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru is not new for someone, who regularly watch Malayalam films as they have made some fascinating investigative thrillers on par with world cinema. But Karthick Naren steals the show with his execution, his non-linear screenplay and slick production values make it a compelling watch.
Jakes Bejoy’s background score enhances the thrill and mystery element throughout the film. Sujith Sarang’s cinematography has used lights and angles that gives the feel of watching a crime investigation flick. The multi-layered complex script is easily conveyed with the razor sharp and clear cuts of Editor Sreejith Sarang.
Of course the film has its share of flaws. Despite the engagement factor, both the halves seem like a bit overstretched. There are a few logical loopholes and some areas which could have been explained a bit more. The reasons behind the crimes may also seem ordinary for a section of audience.
