Kallappadam - Gutsy Debut Attempt
Kallappadam has generated a good amount of interest than the other films releasing this weekend for its active promotions on social media and the energetic team. The film is directed by Vadivel, a former associate of director Mysskin. Vadivel has worked with Mysskin in Anjathe, Yudham Sei, Nandalala. Half way through Onaiyum Aattukuttiyum, he decided to embark on his own journey of film-making after getting nod from a first-time producer for his script.
Plot
Kallappadam is about the struggle of four friends - Vadivel, Gaugin, Santhosh and K - who are actually the film's director, editor, cinematographer and music composer respectively. And they play their respective roles in the film too. When Vadivel approaches a large number of producers who disrespect his script and thoughts, he puts together a sinister plan to perform a robbery at one of the producer's home to fund his debut film. Meanwhile, once-famous actress, played by Lakshmi Priya, is also plotting to rob money from the same producer who is tormenting her as his wife since time immemorial. Who succeeds in the plan?
Plus
The screenplay of Vadivel where he conveys the most bizarre situations through elements of fine comedy is a huge positive factor. While the first half is dominated by comedy, the story gains pace just before the interval and becomes absolutely interesting, thanks to the taut writing. Santhosh's cinematography and K's background elevate the film to a different level. Santhosh's frames often went into the territory of Mysskin with a horde of low range shots.
Minus
The biggest downside of this film is the substandard performances of four leads who flunk to connect with the audiences. While the emotions look honest, the audiences are not able to empathise with any one of the characters. And, the songs at regular intervals are another motion-spoiler in the film.
Bottom-line
Kallappadam is good team effort and synergy is absolutely visible in the end product.
Verdict : Gutsy Debut Attempt
Stars : 2.5/5
