Kayal - Endearing tale of romance
Prabhu Solomon, after delivering two back-to-back tales of romance in Mynaa and Kumki, has offered his third part of love trilogy Kayal as a tribute to the Tsunami victims on its tenth anniversary. Has he scored a hat-trick with his endearing love tale spun around the Tsunami backdrop?
Plot
Aron (Chandran) and Socrates (Vincent) are childhood buddies who grow on their own and are self-declared orphans after losing their parents in an unfortunate accident. They believe in the philosophy of work hard and party harder, except that their definition of party means travelling to new locations with breathtaking natural scenery. They set their eyes on Kanyakumari and meet Kayal (Anandhi ) there in the village chieftain’s place. Chandran falls in love with Kayal and does an impromptu proposal which shakes the villagers and eventually leads them to send out a warning for Aron to not come back to their village forever. Will Aron and Anandhi unite after all the opposition from the villagers? This forms the rest of the story.
Execution
The first half is filled with delightful moments of laughter with an interesting cameo by Prabhu who delivers some uplifting lines of mundane work-life. Though Prabhu Solomon appears preachy at times, he convinces you with his smart writing which is full of life. The second half is an onslaught of emotions from the lead characters. The last few minutes which culminate in the climax are too stimulating though a bit predicable towards the fag end.
Performance
Anandhi has delivered one of the best performances of this year as a lead actress. Her eyes speak lot and demand subtitles for her expressions. Chandran too deserves mention for his commendable debut and looks set for his next round in Tamil cinema come 2015. Rest of the cast has chipped in with natural performances providing the much-needed impetus for this romance drama.
Technicalities
Vetrivel Mahendran’s camerawork is stupendous with fantastic shots and aesthetically composed frames. His lens showcases the sprawling seashores beautifully with an adeptly done CG work by the team. The Tsunami sequences have come out real good and warrants attention. Imman has composed a terrific background score and the songs, though pictured delightfully, spoil the pace of the narration at many points.
Bottom Line
Kayal is an endearing tale of romance set in the Tsunami backdrop. A perfect tribute to the Tsunami victims on the catastrophe’s tenth anniversary.
Verdict : Endearing tale of romance
Stars : 3/5
