Massu Engira Massilamani - A middling entertainer
After a poor last film that was flushed down the drain by audiences and critics, Suriya is looking for a box office magic that will make the audiences forget his Anjaan debacle which was trolled by everyone on social media ruthlessly. Venkat Prabhu has delivered good entertainers in the past with thriller elements weaved seamlessly into the story line every now and then. He has managed success with them too at the box office and carved a niche for himself. So, how has Masss - a supernatural thriller and his first attempt in the genre come out?
Plot
Maasilamani aka Massu (Suriya) is a con man who deceives people and earn money to make ends meet. Jetli (Premgi Amaren) is his partner in crime. Things suddenly become confusing when Masss realizes that he can see spirits and talk of them after an accident. How Masss uses the spirits cunningly to earn more money from the people and the consequences that follow forms the story.
Plus
Taking a genre like horror comedy and experimenting it is itself a great challenge. A right mix of horror, comedy, fantasy and supernatural elements are narrated quite well an ample dose of humor in the script.
The entire supporting cast including Samuthirakani, Lohithsawa, Parthiepan, Sriman, Karunas and Premgi Amaren have delivered neat performances and done justice to their roles.
Yuvan has regained his lost form and is back in full flow here. Shows what a good collaboration can do to a career. RD Rajasekhar has shown the costumes of both the lead actresses in a good manner and has portrayed Suriya superbly on screen as he has done earlier in Kaakha Kaakha and Jillunu Oru Kadhal.
Minus
The film wanders in the first half without any proper, engaging screenplay. The editing looks rushed in the first few minutes leaving the audiences perplexed. The song placements are quite a worry except Piravi track. The twists and turns are not quite satisfying and are totally predictable on the whole.
Bottom-line
A fun ride that is worth your penny. Suriya is back in form and shows what he is capable if a good writer is on board.
Verdict : A middling entertainer
Stars : 2.5/5
