Miruthan - A Must Watch!
REVIEW
Jayam Ravi starrer "Miruthan" is the first zombie movie to be made in Kollywood. The Tamil film, which is being released in about 1,000 screens worldwide, has been written and directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan. As the first zombie film in Tamil, he sets a large canvas and presents a theme that is often seen in Hollywood but has never been tried down south.
It meant having to create a tale that audiences could relate to and convert the written word into vibrant visuals. If the trailers are anything to go by, Sounder Rajan has done a commendable job.
STORY
Just like any other Zombie movie a virus springs up, it infects humans and it spreads, turning everyone into a zombie. And then there is the main character (Jayam Ravi in this case) who tries to save the day from zombies. The film opens with a lot of promise as we are shown a dog turning into a ferocious beast after getting infected by toxic wastes which then bites a man who becomes a zombie and starts a chain of human infections.
Jayam Ravi is Karthick a traffic policeman in Ooty who shies away from any danger as he has to take care of a younger sister in her early teens. He is in love with a doctor Lakshmi Menon but never proposes as all their meetings end up putting him in a bad light and to complicate things Lakshmi is already engaged to be married.
As events take a worse turn it is left for Ravi to take Lakshmi and a group of doctors to Coimbatore where they hope to find a cure for the zombie virus epidemic and the rest of the story is about whether they succeed or not.
PERFORMANCE
Jayam Ravi comes up with a refined performance. Kudos to the actor for not overdoing his job as a movie like Miruthan might force you to exaggerate things. Lakshmi Menon too, is a class act.
Fear is an emotion that may grip you throughout this film and Lakshmi Menon helps accentuate that feel. Comic relief is provided by actors like R N R Manohar and Kaali Venkat. Comedy sequences have worked in parts, which is an added advantage amidst shooting and gore. Baby Anikha is impressive yet again. All other supporting actors including the ones playing zombies have come up with credible performances, for which the director has to be appreciated.
Though cinematography by Venkatesh is on par with some of the recently released Tamil films, his work has to be appreciated as Miruthan is a new attempt in Kollywood. Venkat Ramanan's editing could've been better, especially in the second half. Kudos to the producers, S Michael Rayappan of Global Infotainment and M Seraphin for bankrolling this flick in spite of the risks involved.
Imman's background score is impressive as it is apt for a movie like Miruthan. Special mention goes to the make-up department as the team has managed to score big which is one of the positives of Miruthan.
