Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe - Good concept, flimsy storytelling
Actress Lakshmi Ramakrishnan who made her debut directorial with critically acclaimed Aarohanam has helmed this film titled ‘Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe’. It happens often that certain filmmakers carry a great plot in their minds, which sounds pretty impressive or strike your senses when you hear it on one line. But things turn out to be literally different and quite disappointing when watched on the screens. Lakshmi Ramakrishnan’s Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe – Does it turn fallible on this aspect or prove to be an engrossing drama?
Story
Shabir plays the son of Y.Gee. Mahendran and unwillingness towards education plays a spoilsport in his life. He works for a workshop owned by producer-actor AL Azhagappan. There happens to be a serious situation across the country due to dearth of diesel, but Shabir carries 2000Lts of Diesel stealing it from his father’s petrol bunk for the sake of Azhagappan. What really is the reason behind such stealth act of Shabir forms crux of the story?
Plus
Lakshmi Ramakrishnan tries to handle the plot with much difference by shifting the scenes between present moment and flashback. This is quite innovative and is worthy of appreciations. The only convincing thing in the film is Lakshmi Ramakrishnan’s potential to narrate unique chapters of story interwoven with the basic premise that includes a young couple in relationship affected by the caste feud, pathos of a girl born to rape victim and terrorism.
Minus
The screenplay turns out to be little sluggish with scarcity of engaging moments. The basic conflict of this film is Shabir carrying the Diesel worth 2000Lts, but it has no relevance with the social issue of what Lakshmi Ramakrishnan is trying to project.
Performance
If there could be one actor who has overshadowed everyone, it’s none other than Y.Gee Mahendran who has done a fabulous job. Shabir as the film’s protagonist Shabir seriously has to go through some training in performance as he lacks perfection, but suits to the role certainly. Pia Bajpayee doesn’t score well. AL Azhagappan’s characterisation looks unnatural. The comedy sequences by Thambi Ramaiah and Bala Saravanan doesn’t evoke best response...
Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe carries good concept basically, but everything gets spoiled by not so appealing screenplay.
Verdict : Good concept, flimsy storytelling
Stars : 1.5/5
