Retta Vaalu - Novel attempt, but lacks maturity
Remember Akil??? He made a decent debut with the film ‘Kalloori’ beside Tamannaah directed by Balaji Sakthivel followed by a horror film titled ‘Maasani’. He has now come up with the third film titled ‘Retta Vaalu’ that had earlier gained the title of Vaalu and had changed it later.
Story
The plot of Retta Vaalu is so simple that revolves around a young boy involved in the fraudulent activities. To make his path safe and right in life, both his father and brother send him to juvenile school for gaining good behaviour. After years, when he returns back, he is still the same and starts his theft activities. Suddenly, he runs into a village for refuge from escaping the clutches of police. Over there, he comes across a beautiful girl named Saranya Nag and her father is Thambi Ramaiah, who happens to be the village head. When Thambi Ramaiah comes to know about the love between them and when his true colours are revealed, things take a change in the tale.
Performance
Akil tries to give an impeccable performance, but his role and dialogues could have been crafted more with impact. Saranya Nag is okay and tries to look good with her looks. Thambi Ramaiah has slightly underplayed his performance when compared to his previous ‘Aindhaam Thalaimurai Sidha Vaidhiya Sigamani’.
Plus
Director tries to convey a message that home is the first school and so the parents should be taking care of their children with good responsibility. The story is mixed with the equal ingredients of emotions and sentiments. The screenplay in second half with some unpredictable moments is worthy of appreciations. Characterisation of few actors is good. Music director Selva Ganesh has tried giving some great songs and even his background score is commendable.
Minus
While the second half is little engrossing, the first half doesn’t hold a strong element and we have to wait till intermission for a gripping screenplay. Cinematography doesn’t appeal to the visual sense. Yet another minus is the dearth of logic. The characters try to make you laugh, but they are disappointing.
On the whole, ‘Retta Vaalu’ is a mediocre drama, but director deserves a pat for his attempt of showcasing something with a good message. If he had tried making up for the minuses we have mentioned here in the analysis, the film would gained some additional marks.
Verdict : Novel attempt, but lacks maturity
Stars : 2/5
