Sagaptham - A middling debut for Junior Captain
Sagaptham marks Junior Captain Shanmugha Pandian's debut film in the industry. Film fraternity's respect for Captain Vijayakanth is well-known and his clout with distributors and theatre owners is also familiar. That's the only reason the film has managed to get nearly 200 screens with two tough competitors in Studio Green's Komban and Red Giant's Nanbenda.
Plot
The film starts in a village in Madurai. Shanmugha Pandian plays Saga, who is a good samaritan and an honest young man who roams around his village with his friend Jegan. Power Star plays a character similar to Vadivelu in Vetrikodikattu directed by Cheran. Here, Power Star Srinivasan has returned from Singapore and Jegan utilizes him to play to the gallery. When Saga and Jegan wish to work abroad, they are aided by few agents.
Before leaving, they are advised by Devayani that her husband is left abandoned in Singapore while he travelled to work and no traces of him have been found yet. Saga and Jegan don't pay heed to her advise and embark on their abroad journey only to get cornered by a illegal gang who smuggle drugs. Will Saga come out clean to his village from this gang? This forms the story.
Plus
The only positive aspects are the jokes offered by Jegan at the expense of Power Star. Shanmugha Pandian's debut makes for a good performance but the debutant needs to improve on his expressions. The background score of Karthik Raja is good considering the limited scope he has in the film.
Minus
The screenplay is predictable and awfully staged that it appears so tacky and stereotypical. The dubbing for almost everyone is crappy work and it's evidently showing on screen. The story has a lot of logical loopholes and the stunts appear over-the-top with amateurish fist plays.
Bottomline
While Sagaptham has its moments, it is not sufficient to keep the ordinary film buff engaging. For most of its moments, it appears poorly contrived.
Verdict : A middling debut for Junior Captain
Stars : 2/5
