Salim - An engaging thriller with gripping screenplay
When Vijay Antony announced his second venture that is titles as Salim, speculations were amok and many guessed that if this will be a sequel of Naan, the composers first film as an actor. Well, our guess is right and the film is indeed a sequel of Naan. Now our Medical Student Salim has become a doctor and as he moves forward in life, he is faced with new issues and how he handles them, draws the important point of the story.
Story
The man who has well established himself as Salim is now a very talented doctor and attends a number of poor patients. This is not accepted well by the hospital management he works for as he is being non commercial. His girl friend, as a punishment for being so good, breaks their relationship just two weeks before the wedding. Now Salim has lost his job as well love and deserted by everyone. On top of all this, he is charged with criminal allegations and is imprisoned for two years, which is a price he paid for being kind and innocent. However, Salim resolves to lead a different life for the next 24 hours and by this, the whole city comes to know about a grim truth.
Performance
It is a noteworthy fact that Vijay Antony has retained the character mood of Salim in this prequel too. His politeness, out of the blue breakouts, cool and terrifying nature wins laurels. Similarly, his reactions to the actions of his fiance and the dialogues spoken to the police officer bring him great applause. RNR Manohar plays the role of a corrupt politician and he has fit the role to a T. The actor who has played the role of cop Chezhian has as well done his performance with ease. Though Aksha Pardasany do not have much to play, she has indeed made a strong impression with her arrogant character in the first half.
Technical
Background score is one of the major boon for the film and Vijay Antony has maintained the theme music of 'Ulaginil Miga Uyaram' and 'Naan' which is indeed a wise choice. Similarly, cinematography and editing surpasses the usual expectations.
Plus
Well, it is no easy job to script an appealing and successful sequel, especially for a film like Naan which was a surprise hit in the box office. Here, director Nirmal Kumar who was an assistant of Bharathiraja comes with a more exciting and engaging script that is surely a promising drama and gives a thrill in a number of parts. It is worth mentioning that he has handled the last 30 minutes really well and has added ample of emotions and thrill. Though the first hour does not have any significance to the plot much, the director places prologue where we can see a girl being brutally tortured in the East Cost Road. Well, this is making us all guess heavily and the answer is given with an impact in the second half. The script is intensified even more by the dialogues and the important social issues are told with a thrill earning a roar of applause.
Minus
Despite of little logic missing here and there, Salim is quite engaging and takes us throughout a ride of emotion and thrill. The last 30 mins of the film is certainly worth watching.
Verdict : An engaging thriller with gripping screenplay
Stars : 2.5/5
