Valiyavan - Half-hearted attempt and cliches abound
Valiyavan marks the third film of director Saravanan who made a critically acclaimed debut in Engeyum Eppothum with Jai and a neat actioner in Ivan Vera Mathiri with Vikram Prabhu. This is the second time Jai is joining hands with Saravanan and the expectations are fairly good thanks to the good promos and posters featuring Jai's six-pack abs and a beautiful Andrea.
Plot
Jai works in a lucrative job with a private sector. He falls head over heels with Andrea Jeremiah, who looks absolutely angelic on screen after a long time playing second fiddle to heroines in a string of films. But Andrea is least interested in Jai and boos him away. Jai tries a variety of things to impress Andrea but when an opportunity perfectly strikes to impress her, Jai gets hold of it. He transforms as boxer in the second half for reasons only known to the director. Will Jai and Andrea end marrying each other?
Plus
Andrea's lovely acting and looks are the only solace in this otherwise boring film. Jai plays to his strengths, naive and bold at times. With controlled emotions and at times, the over-the-top actor in him comes out, but it's manageable. The music composed by Imman is another plus with a good number of love tracks and some middling background score to up the ante.
Minus
The half-hearted screenplay, the immatured handling of the script, the done and dusted template are all nothing but headaches to the average moviegoers out there. The film could have been thousand times better if Saravanan concentrated more on the premise and come out with good content instead of adhering to cliches.
Bottom-line
Valiyavan is an immatured third film from Saravanan with a cliched story-line and outmoded handling of script.
Verdict : Half-hearted attempt and cliches abound
Stars : 2/5
