Yagavarayinum Naa Kaaka - An engaging thriller but comes at a cost

Yagavarayinum Naa Kaaka brings back Aadhi on screen after a long wait. The film marks the debut of director Sathya Prabhas, Aadhi's brother. It was also the first Nikki Galrani of Darling fame signed in Tamil. The film also marks the debut of veteran Bollywood Mithun Chakraborty in Tamil since Mani Ratnam's Guru is considered as a dubbed film. How has the film come out?

Plot

Aadhi considers his staunch friendship with three of his college-mates pious. When he falls in love with Nikki Galrani, he is quite surprised to know that the latter shares the same feeling. For New Year Celebrations, when two of their besotted friends photograph a woman - played by Richa Pallod - on their mobile, they get embroiled in a fight with her boy friend.

That single incident entirely changes their lives and how to untangle themselves from it forms the rest of the story.

Plus

The film has a splendid cinematography from Shanmughasundaram and the stunts have been showcased realistically by Dilip Subbarayan.

The screenplay is quite effective with a good mix of ups and downs but the former weighs more than the latter on the whole.

All the supporting cast including Harish Uthaman, Pasupathy, Aadukalam Naren, Mithun have offered life-like performances and so does Richcha Pallod and Lakshmi Priyaa.

Minus

The major glitch of the film is the songs placement. They are a real worry and comes an uncalled-for situations. It slackens the pace of the film.

Nikki Galrani's needless role could have been entirely done away with.

Bottom-line

YNK is a formulaic commercial ride with few good thrilling moments that make the film good in parts.

Verdict : An engaging thriller but comes at a cost

Stars : 2.5/5
